A 24-year-old accounting student at North Carolina State University is the new Miss North Carolina.
Johna Edmonds of Lumberton won the pageant Saturday night in Raleigh. She is Miss Johnston County and will compete in the Miss America pageant in September.
Edmonds' platform is promoting literacy in children. Her talent was performing “Feeling Good,” a jazz number by Nina Simone.
This was Edmonds' third time in the pageant. She said she was so stunned that she won that the runner-up had to shake her before she knew it was real.
Miss Capital City Jessie Smith finished second, Miss Mount Holly Mya Kayler finished third, Miss Queen City Tynia Brandon finished fourth and Miss Greater Carolina Brieanna Hester finished fifth.
