A young mother who jumped from a burning apartment building with her toddler says her injuries are so severe, she may never be able to walk again. Christina Simoes clutched her 18-month-old son Cameron as she jumped from a third-floor window when her apartment complex caught fire. She said, “I grabbed him and held him as tight as I could. I kissed him and told him I loved him and then jumped.”
The little boy is fine with only a small bruise, but Christina lost feeling in her legs as her back broke. “I had to try and Army crawl with my elbows to get away from all the debris that was falling on us,” Christina said.
She’s been told there’s a chance she won’t walk again but she says she’s certain she did the right thing. She said having her son in her arms is one of the greatest Mother’s Day gift she could ever receive.
Investigators have not yet determined the cause of the fire. She will start rehab in ten days.
