The Mesa Police Department lost one of their own in a crash with a wrong way driver Monday morning. Off-duty officer Brandon Mendoza was killed in a head-on crash. Officers reportedly tried to ram the vehicle to get it to stop but they were unsuccessful.
The officer was in his early 30s and was actually on his way home from work. He was a 10-year veteran with the force.
The wrong-way driver also died. He reportedly was burned beyond recognition in the the crash. He has not been identified.
It’s estimated the driver was going the wrong way for more than 35 miles before crashing head-on into the off-duty officer on a blind curve of an Interstate 10-U.S. 60 flyover ramp.
