Two suspects broke into a house in Mechanicsville Friday just shortly after midnight just off North Charleston Rd. Sheriff Wayne Byrd said deputies arrived with bloodhounds and found one suspect dead inside the house. Sheriff Byrd said the man who lives at the house with his wife, daughter-in-law and several children, fired shots at the intruders. Sheriff Byrd said two females and an 11-year-old boy were all injured by the suspects. He said they were assaulted and have some bruising and minor cuts, but no severe injuries.

The suspect identified by Darlington County Coroner Todd Hardee as Marquis Benjamin, 25, from Darlington, died from gunshot wounds and an autopsy is scheduled Friday in Newberry.  The other suspect, Brandon Lunn, was picked up thanks to a tip according to Sheriff Byrd.

A judge denied bond for Lunn on all charges Saturday afternoon, according to a booking officer with the Darlington County Detention Center.

This incident remains under investigation by the Darlington County Sheriff’s Office and the Darlington County Coroner’s Office.  At this time Sheriff Byrd does not anticipate any charges against the homeowner. Byrd said as of right now this appears to be a random crime.

Clarification: An earlier version of the story indicated the child was shot.  After further discussions with law enforcement that was not the case. The child was injured from assault.
