South Carolina Highway Patrol troopers arrested Spartanburg District 7 math teacher and cross country assistant coach Dedra Kiser.

Kiser, who teaches at Spartanburg High School, is facing charges of DUI and child endangerment.

On Friday, troopers received a report of blue, Chevy Suburban driving recklessly in Charleston County.  Troopers spotted the SUV and pulled the driver over.

The Trooper says he noticed a strong smell of alcohol coming from the driver, which he identified as Kiser. There were also seven students in the SUV.

Troopers called the Upstate parents to come and get their children in Charleston. WYFF reported that Kiser was with students in a district vehicle in the Charleston area for a cross country competition.

Sally Hammond, the chief communications officer for District 7, released this statement Monday:

“The safety of our children is always our first and foremost priority. Thankfully, our student athletes are all doing fine. We’ve worked closely with their parents and they have been as understanding as they can be. Our girls were placed in a potentially harmful situation and that is absolutely intolerable.”

“The employee in question has been relieved of her coaching duties and is on administrative leave while the situation is being investigated.”
