1 killed, another hurt in shooting at Robeson County gas station

Two people were shot — and one died — Thursday night at a gas station convenience store in Robeson County. The shooting happened around 7 pm along the 400 block of North Main Street in Red Springs.

Red Springs Police Chief Ronnie Patterson tells News13 that Rodney Maynard, a store clerk at the gas station called “Roscoe’s Roscoe Franklin Ray,” was shot and taken to an area hospital to be treated for his injuries.

James Johnson, a 72-year-old customer, was shot in the face and killed.  Maynard was shot in the neck.

Chief Patterson said they are searching the area off College Street Friday, looking for possibly three suspects.

He said it’s the first murder in town in a few years. Red Springs Mayor John McNeil agreed and said crime in this community is very rare.

Maynard is the son-in-law of an owner of the store.

On Friday, there were numerous comments on Maynard and his wife’s Facebook page about the incident.

“Oh my goodness! This county gets scarier every day. Thinking of everyone involved…. Hopefully they’ll find the people responsible and justice will be served,” wrote Telisa Flowers Garrett.

By Friday afternoon Maynard was out of the hospital, but will go back in for surgery soon, he told WBTW.

Fayetteville Police search and rescue are on the scene and are assisting with the search of the suspects.
