The Cumberland County commissioners are deciding whether they want to consider incentives for a Sanderson Farms chicken plant that could employ almost 1,000 workers.
Commission chairman Kenneth Edge tells The Fayetteville Observer that commissioners will get a closed-door briefing on Monday about the financial sweeteners.
The Mississippi-based company has a 4-year-old chicken operation in Kinston that employee about 1,400 workers. The company is considering a proposal to build a $113 million plant in Cedar Creek, east of Fayetteville.
Hundreds of residents opposed the plant at public meetings this fall. They worry about truck congestion and odors.
Supporters say Sanderson Farms is a well-run, publicly traded company that would provide jobs with an average rate of almost $11 an hour to start.
