HORRY COUNTY, S.C. (WBTW) – Horry County public agencies are making progress on upgrading and replacing hand held radios.
Six months into their Radio Replacement project and county leaders say they’ve already upgraded or completely replaced more than 450 hand held radios for responders.
Fire Rescue Division Chief Richard Gerrald says they started the new installations in November of 2014 and have so far installed close to 350 for Fire Rescue and another 175 for County Police.
The project is a part of a larger improvement plan within the county.
“We’re having to prepare for a major upgrade to our infrastructure which will be going digital and it’ll give us much clearer, precise and some better capabilities in the future.” Gerrald said.
Some of the upgrades also include the computer software on the radios that will transition them analog to digital in anticipation of the countywide upgrade.
Gerrald says they’re about 75% done with the project and should have it completed sometime next year.
