MANDAUE CITY, Philippines (WISH) — Pictures of a homeless boy using the light from a McDonald’s to do his homework outside are touching people around the world.
Joyce Torrefranca posted the photos on her Facebook page June 23, writing, “I got inspired by a kid.” In a few short days, thousands of people liked the pictures, one person even commenting he spoke with the child shortly after they were taken.
The little boy is 9-year-old Daniel Cabrera. News outlet Rappler called the McDonald’s where the pictures were taken and asked about him. The manager said Daniel, his mother and his brother usually stay outside the restaurant and beg from passers-by. The brothers do their homework there because they don’t have electricity at home.
Rappler met Daniel in person the next day at his favorite study spot, that he says is near a bright lamp post in the parking lot.
The 9-year-old said when he grows up, he wants to be a policeman and a doctor.
His mother told the news outlet how proud she is of her son. Daniel’s father died from an illness, and she works at a local eatery, making just enough for the family to get by. She says the three spend their nights at her workplace, adding they pile up benches to serve as makeshift barriers when they sleep.
ABS-CBN News reports support for the family poured in after their story was told. Cash, school supplies, uniforms and a reading lamp have been given to the family, even a scholarship offer that would guarantee Daniel’s education through college.
Joyce Torrefranca, who took the pictures of Daniel, thanked everyone who shared his story.
“I didn’t think that a simple photo can make a huge difference,” she wrote in a Facebook post. “Thank you guys for sharing the photo. With that, we were able to help Daniel in reaching his dreams. I hope Daniel’s story will continue touching our hearts so that we will always be inspired and motivated in every situation we face in life.”
