3 teens among group charged in deadly NC drug deal

GREENVILLE, NC  — A missing teen girl and two other teens are among a group of 5 people who police say killed a man during a drug deal that turned into a robbery Tuesday night.

Four of the group were arrested on Wednesday and the fifth suspect wanted in connection with the homicide has surrendered to authorities.

teen1Officers say they were called to Viadant Medical Center Tuesday night around 7:30 after a man showed up with a gunshot wound to the chest.

The victim, 28-year-old Bakari Jones, was shot during a drug transaction in the 3200 block of Gordon Drive, police say.

He died overnight, but not before providing investigators with information about the incident. Detectives worked overnight identifying those believed to be responsible for Jones’ death and took four into custody to be charged in connection with the case.

“Detectives believe the motive for his murder was likely robbery,” police said.

Samantha Sullivan, age 18, of Vanceboro, who was reported missing in March, was among those rounded up and charged in the case.

Also charged in connection with the incident are 18-year-old Jordan Murphy of Greenville, 20-year-old Dearenta Warren of Winterville, 36-year-old Jeneil Smallwood of Greenville, and 18-year-old Donald Bryant, who turned himself in at 6 p.m. Wednesday.

The group is facing multiple charges including murder, robbery with a dangerous weapon, and conspiracy robbery with dangerous weapon.

Dearenta D. Warren, 20, of Worthington Street, Winterville is charged with: Murder, Robbery with a Dangerous Weapon, Conspiracy Robbery Dangerous Weapon.

Specific charges for Bryant were not available Wednesday night.

The investigation is still active and ongoing.
