UPDATE – July 27 at 2:00pm – Marlboro County Coroner Tim Brown has ruled the incident an accidental drowning.
WALLACE, SC — Two toddlers from North Carolina were pronounced dead after drowning in a pool Friday morning in Marlboro County, SC.
According to Marlboro County Coroner Tim Brown, the double drowning happened at a pool on Highway 79 in the Wallace community in Marlboro County.
The coroner identifies the victims as Kenlee Elizabeth Higgins, 2, and 1-year-old Devyn Sue Higgins of Laurinburg, NC. According to the coroner, the two were sisters.
Both children were pronounced dead at Chesterfield General Hospital. The two children drowned while their mother, Jacklyn Higgins, was at work, according to a GoFundMe page set up by the family.
Richard Boles Funeral Home said in an obituary that the two girls and their family are from Laurinburg.
Funeral services will be at 4 p.m. on Monday at Northview Harvest Ministries in Laurinburg officiated by Pastor Kenneth Blease. Burial will follow in Hillside Memorial Park.
Visitation will begin at 2 until 4 p.m. prior to the service on Monday at Northview Harvest Ministries.
The coroner says the incident remains under investigation.
The family has started a GoFundMe page to help pay for the funeral of the young girls.
“Jacklyn is a hardworking, single mother, with three other children to support. As you can imagine, money for extras doesnt come easy, and funerals are costly,” the page says. “We’re asking for anyone who may feel it in their heart to help out, to please donate what you can.”
