MARLBORO COUNTY, SC (WBTW)-The Marlboro County Sheriff’s Office mourns the loss of a deputy who died from injuries in an accident.
Marlboro County Coroner Tim Brown confirmed that Deputy Delton Daniels passed away Saturday morning at McLeod Regional Center in Florence.
According to the Officer Down Memorial page, Daniels succumbed to injuries sustained 11 days earlier when the patrol SUV he was a passenger overturned in a ditch on Highway 15-401, near McColl.
Officials say that the vehicle may have struck standing water in the roadway during a period of heavy rain.
Daniels was 22-years-old and was referred to as “Del” by the community. According to his obituary on the Burroughs and Cooper Funeral page, he was a member of Christ United Methodist Church. Del attended Florence-Darlington Technical College and was a Deputy with the Marlboro County Sheriff’s Department. He began volunteering with the fire department when he was 15 and was a member of the Bennettsville and Brightsville Fire Departments.
In a statement, Marlboro County Sheriff Fred Knight says:
“On behalf of the Marlboro County Sheriffs Office, the citizens of Marlboro County and all Police, Fire and Emergency service personnel in Marlboro County, I’d like to extend my condolences and prayers to the family of our Sheriffs Deputy Delton Daniels. This has been a very emotional and heartbreaking ordeal we have all experienced. This young man brought a lot of joy to his family, friends and co-workers. I urge everyone to pull together as a team and continue to pray and help each other as the days go by.”
Deputy Daniels had only served with the Marlboro County Sheriff’s Office for one week when the crash occurred. He also served as a firefighter with the Bennettsville City Fire Department.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, August 4, 2015 at Christ United Methodist Church followed by burial in Oak Ridge Cemetery in Bennettsville. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Monday, August 3, 2015 at Burroughs & Cooper Funeral Home.
