SUMMERVILLE, S.C. (WBTW & AP) – South Carolina investigators are sorting out the killing of a man shot to death by law officers.
Multiple media reports say the chase ending in death early Saturday started with reported gunshots and an escaping car. A state Highway Patrol trooper spotted and tried to stop the vehicle.
State Law Enforcement Division spokesman Thom Berry said the driver led law officers on a chase through Dorchester County.
Berry says the driver eventually slowed enough to let two people jump out of the car, then fired at the pursuing trooper’s car.
The suspect’s car crashed into a tree and a house outside Summerville. Arriving sheriff’s deputies said they told the exiting driver to drop what appeared to be a weapon, but fired the fatal shots when it didn’t happen.
SLED says the investigation is ongoing. They say it is the 31st involved officer related shooting in South Carolina this year and the first in Dorchester County. There were 42 officer related shootings in the state in 2014 and none in Dorchester County.
