Pawleys Island Recycling Center reopens after acid spill

PAWLEYS ISLAND, SC (WBTW) — Firefighters responded to a hazmat call at the Pawleys Island Recycling Center Thursday morning, and the center is still shut down while cleanup continues.

Firefighters found acid, most likely from a leaking car battery someone disposed of, in one of the center’s trash containers, according to Georgetown County officials.

The center, located at 596 Grate Avenue, had to be cleaned up and the hazmat crews had to remove all of their equipment before the center reopened just after 1 p.m.
