Myrtle Beach summer camp kids create art work for city

Myrtle Beach Police Officer Mike Dame and summer day camp participants presented an art piece to City Council on Tuesday.

MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WBTW) – Myrtle Beach Police Officer Mike Dame and summer day camp participants presented an art piece to City Council on Tuesday.

The art piece is made of wood, featuring thoughtful words and the children’s artistic drawings. The only instruction to the children was to illustrate what they love most about the City of Myrtle Beach.

The wooden puzzle-like pieces fit together to form a more complete vision of the city, symbolizing the equal importance of an individual’s civic participation as well as involvement within the collective community.

The art features the following phrases in a circular pattern:
“My city, my friends, my history, my home, my legacy, my responsibility, my family and my beach…”

A quote from Booker T. Washington appears in the center of the art piece, reading:

“Success in life is founded upon attention to the small things.”

Officer Dame is a 15-year veteran of the Myrtle Beach Police Department and will continue teaching art classes in the fall at the Historic Myrtle Beach Colored School and Education Center.

The Neighborhood Services Division is responsible for coordinating the summer camps.
