MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WBTW) – South Carolina is getting a new area code, resulting in new dialing procedures for residents along the Grand Strand.
The current seven digit dialing procedure when placing local calls will end on Friday, September 18. Beginning on Saturday, September 19, local calls must include area code 843 or 854, followed by the 7-digit local telephone number.
If a caller does not use the new dialing procedures on or after September 19, the call will not be completed as dialed. A recording will simply instruct the caller to hang up and dial again.
The new 854 area code will be assigned to new businesses or residents requesting new service, an additional line, or in some cases moving their service beginning October 19, according to HTC.
The South Carolina Public Service Commission ordered an Area Code Overlay for the area of South Carolina served by 843. The new 854 area code will be “overlaid” or superimposed over the same geographical area as the 843 Area Code.
