OLD FORT, NC (AP/CNN) – A man was hurt after falling from Catawba Falls in McDowell County — the second such fall by a hiker in a week..
WLOS-TV reported a man in his mid-30s slipped from the rock face around 11 a.m. Sunday and fell about 30 feet after bouncing off other rocks.
It took emergency medical crews about three hours to get the man to safety. EMS director William Kehler said the area was very remote and the terrain was very rugged at the waterfall.
Devin Starr, a witness, said that he’s surprised the man survived.
“I think it’s a miracle he survived that because from where they had pointed to where he had fallen, that was a long drop,” Starr told WLOS-TV.
Kehler says the man was airlifted to Mission Hospital in Asheville with injuries that were not thought to be life threatening.
The incident is the second such fall in a week — with a teen falling in the same area on Aug. 9, exactly a week earlier.
The man hurt on Sunday has not been identified.
