SOUTH FLORENCE- The Bruins have put together back-to-back 12-win seasons, and fell one game short of a spot in the 4A Division 2 state title game last year. This season, they’ll try to get the job done again without a huge class of seniors (27) including several who headed to play in college.
“We have to step up and lead the young guys. When they fall off track we just have to get them back on track and lead them, lead the way,” senior wide receiver David Vereen said.
Vereen returns with a group of three other talented wide receivers that started for the Bruins last season.
The biggest change this season will be filling the void left at quarterback after losing Nick Jones. He was one of the top signal-callers in the Blitz area the last couple seasons. He signed with the Citadel.
Senior Lindsey Robinson will fill that roll. He worked with Nick throughout the past few seasons, and says he’s ready for his chance to lead the team.
“It’s our senior year. We have a bunch of guys going out, but we had a bunch of guys going out last year. We’re still bringing a big squad back to the table,” Robinson said.
With 11 total starters returning, head coach David Prince says he’s confident in this team’s capabilities.
“It’s just a balance. We didn’t take a hit at any one position so we feel like there’s some experience at every position so hopefully they’ll be leaders on the field,” Prince said.
