EDENTON, N.C. – A man remains in jail after deputies say he attempted to rob an Edenton convenience store with a machete.
The Chowan County Sheriff’s Office said the attempted robbery happened at the Goody Convenience Store in Edenton on Aug 10. Deputies say 37-year-old Shon Waterfield used a machete to threaten the store clerk after entering the store around 8:30a.m.
A viewer sent WNCT surveillance video of the attempted armed robbery.
In the video, you can see the suspect pull out a machete then come behind the counter towards the store clerk. However, the clerk fought back and forced the would-be robber out of the store before he could get any cash.
Investigators say Waterfield was arrested about an hour later in a wooded area near Cedar Hill Road. Deputies say a K9 tracked him down after he crashed his car into a ditch while trying to get away.
The sheriff’s office says community members helped deputies arrest Waterfield by watching the perimeter of the woods to make sure the suspect did not escape.
Waterfield faces two felony counts of Attempted Robbery with a Dangerous Weapon. He was taken to the Chowan County Detention Center and given a $75,000 bond.
Waterfield’s next court appearance is scheduled for Aug 25.
Deputies say the store clerk did sustain some cuts to his hands from struggling with the suspect.
