Deputies arrest three for incident at Bennettsville federal prison

BENNETTSVILLE (WBTW) — Marlboro County sheriff’s deputies arrested three people for smuggling contraband into the federal prison in Bennettsville, according to a press release.

Sheriff Fred Knight said his deputies had been investigating allegations into the smuggling for several weeks, and investigators in the prison were able to determine a possible transfer would happen Tuesday. 23-year-old Leonard Cooper of Savannah, Georgia, was arrested near the prison with several contraband items. Deputies found and arrested 26-year-old Toni Sawyer of Savannah at the Huddle House restaurant in Bennettsville, along with 19-year-old Nia Mitchell (also of Savannah.)

The three are charged with trespassing and possession with intent to distribute marijuana.  Federal charges are still pending, according to deputies.

“This is a prime example of how cooperation, team work and information sharing can produce results,” Marlboro County Sheriff Fred Knight said as part of a press release. “The federal prison attracts family and friends from all over the country to Marlboro County to visit inmates and we have the responsibility of assisting them in maintaining their safety and that of the community in Marlboro County. “
