A group of young athletes experienced the rare opportunity to train alongside an Olympian in Myrtle Beach Sunday afternoon.
The Riptides Racing Team hosted a two-hour swim clinic with 2012 Olympic Gold Medalist Matt McLean. McLean earned his medal as a member of the men’s 800 meter freestyle relay team in London.
“Nothing’s more rewarding than being able to share my experiences and actually see the results instantly when a kid decides to make a change and help [themselves],” McLean said. “Its very rewarding.”
McLean says hard work and a strong mentality has shaped his swimming career. He shared his favorite swim stories to the group of more than two dozen swimmers before spending time running drills in the pool.
McLean also won gold as part of the men’s 800 meter free relay team at the 2014 Pan Pacs. He also won gold in the same realy at the 2013 FINA World Championships.
