FLORENCE, S.C. (WBTW) – A Florence nursing home patient experienced a ride of a lifetime Thursday as NASCAR trucks made their way from Florence to Darlington.
It’s not often you see a red carpet put out at the front door step of a nursing home.
“You know what the saying is, lady’s first,” James Cabbagestalk said.
James Cabbagestalk lives at Honorage Nursing Home in Florence. There’s never a dull moment when he comes around.
“I’m just an all-around kind of guy. I love people,” said Cabbagestalk.
James Cabbagestalk is 59-years-old. He’s driven “18 wheelers” for 30 of those years. He says he’s driven through 48 states and Canada.
“The funny thing about Canada, I was doing alright until they went to speaking French to me and I got lost,” he said.
For the past few years he told the nurses he wants to go back to driving trucks.
“Yea that’s my thing. I never lost my touch,” he added.
So since Cabbagestalk has a passion for big trucks and NASCAR, a nurse decided to do something special. She posted a Facebook message for a NASCAR driver just to blow the horn at Cabbagestalk as he was standing by.
“I’m a Cale Yarborough fan, Dale Earnhardt, Richard Petty, all of those NASCAR drivers,” he mentioned.
But just blowing the horn wasn’t enough to show gratitude. Instead, NASCAR sent a party bus and offered him the chance to ride in one of the big trucks in the parade.
He was thrilled that he could barely hold his composure.
“Yes! I’m excited about meeting the NASCAR, race car drivers,” he said.
That simple request on Facebook, turned into a day he’ll remember forever.
