Loris man robs store 9 months after prison release

A jury convicted Raymond Smiley of Loris of armed robbery Thursday.

HORRY COUNTY, SC (WBTW) – A Loris man will return to jail after committing an armed robbery just nine months after serving a 20 year sentence for the same type of crime.

A jury convicted Raymond Smiley of Loris of armed robbery Thursday. The trial began on Wednesday with the verdict being handed down Thursday afternoon.

According to Senior Assistant Solicitor George DeBusk, Smiley approached the counter at the Wilco – Hess Store in Loris on August 23, 2014. According to the cashier on duty, Smiley approached his register as if to make a purchase, but when he was given his total, Smiley pulled out what appeared to be a pistol partially wrapped in a paper napkin and demanded the money in the register.

The Loris Police Department reports Smiley confessed to robbing the Wilco Store.

Smiley had been released after serving a 20 year prison sentence just nine months prior to the robbery in August of 2014. He also has prior convictions for Criminal Domestic Violence of a High and Aggravated Nature, Assault with Intent to Kill, Housebreaking, Arson Second Degree, and several other offenses, adds DeBusk.

Smiley was sentenced to 30 years, which is the maximum sentence for armed robbery, for the Wilco crime.
