Have You Heard – September 20, 2015

Have You Heard, it was 42 years ago tonight (9/20/1973) that Billie Jean King beat Bobby Riggs in the “Battle of the Sexes” in the Houston Astrodome.
Riggs was 55 and well past his prime; King was 29, and just barely past hers. However, Riggs had dismantled Margaret Court (30 at the time) just four months earlier and he boasted no woman could beat him.
King won in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3, 6-3.

That same night, and fewer than 200 miles away, one of the best singer/songwriters of his day, Jim Croce, died in a plane crash.
The plane crashed after leaving a concert in Natchitoches, Louisiana. Five others also died in the crash, which was blamed on pilot error.
Jim Croce was only 30 years old.

David Bowie had a number of big hits, but only one number-one.
That was “Fame,” and it hit the top spot 40 years ago today (9/20/1975).

Cal Ripken, Jr., sat out a game 17 years ago today. That ended his 17-year streak of consecutive games played at 2,632 and that’s a mark that will likely never be topped.

Sophia Loren is 81 today.

Today is both Wife Appreciation Day and Puppy Mill Awareness Day.
