COWARD, SC (WBTW) – More than eight inches of water filled the floors throughout Coward Church of God after the flooding. Sheet rock and carpet had to be removed from the inside of the church. But despite the damage members still filled the seats Sunday for their morning service.
Finding a purpose in the church’s nightmare was the message Pastor Kevin Byrd gave to his congregation Sunday moning.
“When the nightmare comes into your life you have to trust god. When the nightmare comes into your life you have to look to the face of god,” said Byrd as he stood behind a podium.
It was an emotional and uplifting service for members.
Sarah Parker has been a member of the Coward Church of God more than 20 years.
“We all go through hard times. We all have struggles in our own lives and it’s just not when you have the church to be affected, it affects every member,” explained Parker.
The church cooling system and plumbing were destroyed in the flood. The insulation had to be removed from walls to keep the building from leaving mold and a foul odor.
Pastor Kevin Byrd says repairing the church will take some time, but he isn’t worried because what was damaged can be easily fixed.
“We’re going to make it with the help of our friends, and the help of the lord. We’re going to make it,” Byrd said.
“The church is really just a building, and we the people make up the church, and I don’t think that can be destroyed,” mentioned Parker.
Pastor Kevin Byrd tells News 13 he is grateful of the support from the community and his hope is to rebuild in the next month.
Byrd says the biggest expense will be replacing new carpet throughout the church. He says the church has set up a gofundme account and the link is posted on their Facebook page.
