GREENVILLE, S.C. (AP) – A South Carolina sheriff says a man killed in a shootout with deputies screamed that he didn’t want to go back to jail moments before opening fire.
Bernard Powers was killed early Sunday. Another man was wounded.
Sheriff Steve Loftis on Tuesday disclosed more details about the shooting, which took place outside a building that doubled as a social club.
It began when a deputy responding to a routine call spotted a car parked illegally near the building.
Loftis says the deputy arrested a man in the car on drug charges, but another man fled.
As authorities were getting ready to search the building, Loftis says Powers pulled a gun.
A week earlier, authorities say Powers had tried to run over deputies while eluding arrest.
