Bond denied for accused murderer in Lake City nightclub killing

Tommy William McGee, 29, of Lake City, is charged with murder.

LAKE CITY, SC (WBTW) – Lake City Police say bond has been denied for the man accused of killing a Turbeville man during an assault at a Lake City nightclub early Wednesday morning.

Lake City Police Chief Jody Cooper confirmed in a phone conversation with News13 that 29-year-old Tommy William McGee, of Lake City, is charged with murder and was denied bond in his first court appearance Wednesday afternoon. Online booking records from the Florence County Detention Center state McGee was booked into the jail at 10:26 a.m. Wednesday.

According to a press release, the incident happened at The Office nightclub on John Street around 1:25 a.m. Wednesday.

Florence County Coroner Keith von Lutcken identified the victim as James E. Welch, 47, of Turbeville. The coroner said Welch died at a local hospital and his body has been sent to MUSC for an autopsy.

The murder remains under investigation by Lake City Police Department and the Florence County Coroner’s Office.
