A test that could predict kidney disease

CBS NEWS – A simple blood test could soon help determine if you’re at risk of developing chronic kidney disease. A study in the New England Journal of Medicine shows that the test which looks at levels of a protein called su-PAR , can reliably predict a persons chances of developing the disease 5 years before symptoms start. A team of scientists from San Francisco, Michigan and St. Louis has identified a chemical that could be used in eye drops to reverse cataracts. Its the first identified compound thats soluble enough to be used in an eye drop. Cataracts are the worlds leading cause of blindness. SOURCE – Science/MedDay/CBS

Getting less sleep could increase your risk for diabetes. Colorado researchers say getting only five hours of sleep a night diminishes the body’s sensitivity to insulin and impairs the ability to regulate blood sugar. Levels were normal when study participants slept nine hours a night. SOURCE – Current Biology/MedDay/CBS
