NC man charged with neglect after elderly, bedridden wife dies

LINCOLNTON, N.C. (AP) – Authorities in Lincoln County have accused a man of neglecting his bedridden wife for months before she died.

The Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release Thursday that 72-year-old Bobby Dean Armstrong of Stanley is charged with neglect of a disabled or elderly person with serious injury.

Detective Capt. Tim Johnson said 72-year-old Janet Groner Armstrong was forced to lie in her own excrement, had bed sores and a deep open leg wound that was covered with maggots.

Officials say Bobby Armstrong sought help for his wife on Sept. 18. Emergency personnel treated Janet Armstrong at the home before she was taken a Charlotte hospital, where she died one day later.

Bobby Armstrong is jailed under a $100,000 bond. He is scheduled to appear in court on Friday.
