The Darlington County School Board met with a task force group from Lamar Monday night about a school consolidation between two elementary schools in the district.
The group is asking to consolidate Lamar Elementary and Spaulding Elementary and put the students in a brand-new school.
Leaders of the task force say they haven’t had a new school in almost sixty years, and in order to make the appropriate technology advances, the district needs to build a new school.
Board members say building a school is something they will take into consideration and that they agree a consolidation is needed.
“We’ll take a look at everything and do what’s best for our schools. We want to do what’s best for our students and what’s best for Lamar. That’s what it’s all about now,” said Darlington County School Board member Warren Jeffords.
The task force asked the board to look at the district’s budget and to vote on building the new school this February.
The board said they will review the group’s proposal, prepare a list of questions, and get them back to the committee.
