MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WBTW) – The Myrtle Beach Police Department is using a popular Christmas character to guide neighbors on how to protect themselves during the holiday season.

A video created by the department depicts Dr. Seuss character, The Grinch, showing up on the doorstep of a Myrtle Beach home, snatching purses and stealing Christmas gifts. The police department created the entertaining video to give holiday shoppers and travelers safety tips on protecting themselves, and their purchases.

“Myrtle Beach Police presents: Don’t Get Grinched!” warns neighbors:

  • If you have an alarm: set it while away or asleep

    Myrtle Beach Police advise to always be aware of your surroundings while shopping.
  • Leave a light on: Double check your door lock
  • Don’t display gifts where they can be seen
  • Be wary of strangers soliciting for charitable donations
  • Avoid leaving boxes from expensive purchases out on the curb for trash pick-up
  • Do not advertise on social media that you’ll be away from your home
  • Shop only on secure websites
  • Check your credit and bank statements regularly for fraud
  • Always be aware of your surroundings while shopping
  • Avoid carrying or counting large amounts of cash while shopping
  • Don’t place your purse in shopping cart
  • Have your keys in hand when approaching vehicle
  • Keep your vehicle doors locked and purchases in your trunk
  • Check your backseat and around your car before getting in
