SC deputy shot, suspect dead after armed robbery call

GREENVILLE COUNTY –  A deputy was shot in the head while responding to a possible armed robbery call in Taylors — and a suspect is now dead, Sheriff Steve Loftis says.

The Greenville County coroner was on the scene after reports of a shooting came in around 1:30 a.m. Thursday at 1900 Boling Road Extention. That appears to be located at the Spring Grove Apartments.

A neighbor near where the incident happened said she heard a gunshot. When deputies arrived on the scene they noticed the apartment seemed to be in disarray and proceeded to knock on the door. Deputies didn’t get a response, so they forced their way inside. Upon entry, deputies saw a man standing with a gun pointed at them. The male suspect fired one round of bullets, striking one deputy in the head, the sheriff says.

The deputy who was shot is in surgery and is expected to be okay. The other deputies returned fire and killed the suspect, Sheriff says.

SLED was called in to investigate. The other deputies are okay and are placed on administrative duties for a few days.

40-45 deputies responded to the scene and it’s believed to have been an isolated situation, sheriff says.

We have a crew on the scene – they were pushed back for their own safety. Our crew says deputies with the Greenville County Sheriff’s Office are investigating. A SWAT team and the K-9 Unit were there, as well. Troopers with the South Carolina Highway Patrol were on scene earlier but left around 1:30 a.m.

The Greenville County Coroner’s Office has not released the name of the suspect yet.
