NORTH MYRTLE BEACH (WBTW) — North Myrtle Beach Police arrested a man officers say set a fire at the Walmart on U.S. Highway 17 on Tuesday.
A police officer was already at the store when an employee approached and said someone had just set a fire in the electronics department, according to a police report.
The employee identified the man he said was responsible, and the officer arrested 18-year-old Richard Andrew Whidby. The officer’s report states Whidby admitted he was “high” and “bored” and that’s why he’d set the fire in the store.
It also states the officer found a propane torch and wire cutters on Whidby.
Whidby was booked at J. Reuben Long Detention Center, charged with third degree arson. He was given $15,000 bail but was still in jail as of Thursday morning.
