SC police officer killed by 17-year-old gang member

Greenville Police Officer Allen Jacobs was shot and killed by a 17-year-old gang member, police chief says.

GREENVILLE, SC (WSPA) – Greenville Police say officer Allen Jacobs was shot and killed near the 300 block of Laurens Rd. around 12:30 PM.

The police chief says officers approached a self-admitted gang member, 17-year-old Deontea Mackey. Mackey ran from officers down Rebecca St. and opened fire, hitting Officer Jacobs several times.

Officer Jacobs later died at Greenville Memorial Hospital. Greenville Police Chief says Jacobs leaves behind a wife, who is expecting with the couple’s child.

Police say Mackey shot and killed himself on Swamp Rabbit Trail. A section of the trail has been closed between Woodland Way and the Sliding Rock Creek trail.

Mackey was arrested in March 2015 for strong arm robbery. He was convicted and sentenced to 10-years suspended for 251 days time served. Officials report Mackey is believed to have called his mom right before he shot himself.

Department officials say Officer Jacobs worked on the gang activity unit and was dedicated to his job and making the community a safer place for residents.
