Former shelter dog nominated for Hero Dog of the Year

MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WBTW) – Issac, an 8-year-old Golden Retriever, was adopted from the Grand Strand Humane Society in 2008 to participate in a Canines for Veterans program facilitated by Marines at Camp Lejeune. He is now a registered service dogIssac for retired Army Captain Leslie Nicole Smith who is a national spokesperson for the Wounded Warrior Program.

Captain Smith lost her left leg and her vision in service to her county and says that she and Issac had an immediate bond, “we bonded instantly and he forever changed my life; giving me my freedom back by helping me walk…From his instincts, Issac naturally adjusted to my challenging needs, gifting me with renewed hope, courage, and confidence. He taught me to believe in myself again.”
