DARLINGTON, SC (WBTW) – Annual evaluations at Darlington County Detention Center reveals the jail is not compliant with the Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) regulations. Darlington County Sheriff Wayne Byrd said, “The facility has always needed additional employees.”
“The issue now is in order to be PREA compliant we must reach that staffing compliance,” says Sheriff Byrd. To gain compliance with the PREA regulations Darlington County needs to hire ten more guards.
Sheriff Byrd says the staff shortage “opens us up for greater liabilities for lawsuits because you are not in compliance with the states standards. It also puts our employees in a situation where they are shorthanded.”
The PREA regulations only affect inmate transfers from the South Carolina Department of Corrections. Sheriff Byrd said, “It does not affect our local detention inmates only thing this affects is our trustees that are sent from state prison.”
Darlington County Council Vice Chairman, Robbin Brock says the County Administrator is working tirelessly to find money in next year’s budget. Sheriff Byrd says, “They don’t necessarily have to hire ten people at one time. As long as they have a plan to work toward that goal they will be in compliance.”
