Escaped inmate followed construction worker out of North Myrtle Beach jail

NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (WBTW) -One inmate from the North Myrtle Beach jail was on the loose Thursday afternoon.

Atticus Barber was recently arrested in connection to multiple burglaries in the Windy Hill area, North Myrtle Beach Spokesperson Pat Dowling said.

According to reports, he escaped from jail this morning around 11 a.m. and was returned to the detention center at 12:45 p.m.

Officials say that Barber complained of a medical ailment and was taken out of his cell and into a processing area by a jailer.

When the jailer went to the next room to call for medical help, the inmate followed a construction worker out of the processing area into the location where police cars park and unload people that have been arrested.

The doors to that unloading area were open at the time because another police officer had arrived to drop off another inmate.  Once through the door, Barber fled.

A few hours later, authorities found Barber in the area of Anne Street.
