NC man dies in rip current while visiting Atlantic Beach

ATLANTIC BEACH, N.C. – Atlantic Beach saw its third rip current-related death of the summer.

Fire Chief Adam Snyder said crews responded to a drowning call around 7:10 Wednesday evening. It happened in front of Beach Condos which is near Ft. Macon.

Snyder said a 41-year-old man was swimming with his son when he got caught up in a rip current. Other beachgoers were able to pull him in and started CPR. He was then transported to Carteret Heath Care.

Snyder said the man was swimming in an area without lifeguards. However, yellow flags were up.

The family was visiting from Old Fort, which is in McDowell County.

The man’s identity has yet to be released.
