COWARD, SC (WBTW) – Florence County investigators have released new details about the shooting that killed a child Tuesday.
A press release by Major Michael Nunn says officers responded to a call that a child was suffering a gunshot wound on Circle Drive in Coward at 5 p.m.
On arrival, deputies found one 12-year-old with a significant wound and a 7-year-old with non-life threatening injuries.
The 12-year-old died and the 7-year-old was treated and released.
On Wednesday, Florence County coroner Keith von Lutcken identified the child accidentally killed as Mason Powell of Coward.
The press release says investigators believe an 11-year-old gained access to a handgun and accidentally fired it once, striking both victims with one round.
At the time, all three children were being watched by a 15-year-old babysitter.
Florence County Sheriff’s Office has concluded that no foul play was involved and coroner Keith von Lutcken confirmed that the cause of death was accidental.
“Following extensive consultation with all parties, no criminal charges are anticipated at this time,” the release said.
