Funeral set for SC high school player who died after football practice

LEXINGTON, S.C. (AP) – Funeral services are being held Monday for a South Carolina high school football player who collapsed at practice and later died.

Local media outlets report that services for 14-year-old Lewis Simpkins are being held Monday at the Word of God Church and Ministries in Columbia.

Simpkins, a sophomore defensive tackle at River Bluff High School in Lexington County, fell to the ground near the end of a two-hour practice last Wednesday night. He died later at Lexington Medical Center.

Lexington County Coroner Margaret Fisher says that initial autopsy results were inconclusive and that additional tests are being conducted to determine the cause of death.
