Man charged with attempted murder after assaulting two women with a box cutter

SUMTER, SC (WBTW) – Deputies with the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office arrested a man Saturday after he allegedly assaulted two women with a box cutter.

A release from Ken Bell with the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office says Hazel Leonard Budden Jr., 31, of  McCrays Mill Road in Sumter, was charged with two counts of attempted murder.

Deputies and EMS responded to a home on the 200 block of Murphy Street in Sumter at about 9:15 a.m. Saturday. When deputies arrived, they found two female victims with lacerations.

One of the victims told authorities that she had been dating the suspect, but they did not live together, Bell says.  The victim said she had just arrived home when Budden came outside and began hitting her and later pulling out a box cutter and cutting her.

The other victim, who officials say was the first victim’s sister, said she saw what was happening and ran outside to try to help her sister. Budden reportedly attacked the sister at that point, also cutting her, Bell says.

One victim was taken to the hospital. The other did not require medical treatment.

Officers took Budden into custody near the scene.
