HANAHAN, S.C.— A gruesome discovery Tuesday in Hanahan. The body of a woman was found stuffed in a closet.

At about 12:30 Tuesday afternoon, Hanahan police received a call to do a welfare check at the Landing apartment complex. A woman had not been seen or heard from in a couple of days.

Bradley Acord lives in the complex. “My fiancé told me how she just saw one lady go over to the office and two minutes later a cop had come in which escalated into a bunch of cops.”

The body of 39-year-old Melanie Rivera was found stuffed in a closet in unit 10-A. The coroner says she was there for more than 24 hours. A cause of death has not been released.

Hanahan Police Chief Dennis Turner tells News 2, “This was an isolated incident. From what we’re gathering, it appears to be domestic related. So there is no concern. Residents over there shouldn’t have any type of safety concern.”

A few hours after the body was discovered, Michael Patrick Strait, Jr. was arrested for the murder. “We received information he was in the area. We made a traffic stop that was conducted at Maybelline Road and Railroad Avenue, not too far from the apartment, and he was taken into custody without incident.”

Strait has other active warrants in Goose Creek, Berkeley County and the SC Department of Corrections. Charges include failure to pay child support.

Strait is currently in the Berkeley county jail facing a murder charge.
