Howe Springs Fire Department holds benefit for wounded paramedic

FLORENCE, SC (WBTW) – Tuesday the Howe Springs Fire Department hosted a chicken bog fundraiser for Tessie Smith.

The veteran paramedic was severely injured back in march after her ambulance was involved in a head-on crash near Mcleod hospital in Florence.

Smith went through five operations and lost her right leg. Tuesday’s event was to help pay for a new home that’s handicap accessible.

“Thank you doesn’t seem like it’s ever enough but all I can really do is say thank you and that I appreciate it. It means more than I can ever say or ever repay,” Tessie Smith said.

Co-workers, friends and family have donated toward the cost of building a home for Smith and she is now the proud owner of three acres of land and a set of ADA compliant house plans. However, approximately $40,000 is still needed to complete the build on her home.
