RALEIGH, NC— A multi-vehicle wreck killed a man and closed Glenwood Avenue inbound for several hours midday Monday, officials said.
The wreck was reported just before 11:20 a.m., according to Raleigh police. It happened at Mile Marker 299, near the intersection with N.C. Route 50.
The man was taken to WakeMed, where he was pronounced dead. No other life-threatening injures are reported, police said.
The crash happened when a Raleigh man driving a BMW sedan was heading west on Glenwood Avenue and crossed into the eastbound lanes, hitting a Hyundai head-on, Raleigh police said in a report.
The Hyundai, driven by an Apex woman, then spun and collided with a Nissan that was traveling behind the Hyundai, police said.
The driver of the BMW, Kagney Landon Ray, 31, died in the crash, according to the police report. Police noted in the crash report that they suspected drug impairment in the driver of the BMW.
Police also said in the crash report that they believe Ray fell asleep or lost consciousness before the crash.
The woman in the Hyundai suffered serious but non-life threatening injuries.
Two people in the Nissan were not hurt.
The road closure caused considerable disruption for the area’s traffic.
The Department of Transportation later confirmed the road had reopened.
